Affirmative Action 40 Years after Bakke: Addressing Equity through Policy and Practice
In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. Forty years later, the Bakke decision continues to play a significant role in the affirmative action debate.
In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. At that time, Justice Thurgood Marshall concluded, “I doubt there is a computer capable of determining the number of persons affected by the decision in this case.” Forty years later, the Bakke decision continues to play a significant role in the affirmative action debate. This symposium of multiple panels will focus on the impact of Bakke from various perspectives including policy, research, and practice. Presenters will discuss the wide range of issues raised by this case and consider the future of equal opportunity and access to higher education.
