Trustees in Higher Education: What Do They Do and Why Should We Care?
Dr. Baldwin, a trustee of Hiram College, will share his knowledge of trustees from his personal experience and empirical research.
Monday, October 29, 2:30-3:30
Erickson Hall, Room 252
Trustees fill a vital role in the operations of colleges and universities even though their work is often nearly invisible to students, faculty, and the general public. Legally, trustees are the final authority of the institutions they serve. Controversial events in recent years involving trustees at institutions like the University of Virginia, Penn State, and Michigan State University (MSU) have increased interest in the roles and responsibilities of trustees. Dr. Baldwin, a trustee of Hiram College, will share his knowledge of trustees from his personal experience and empirical research. This session will provide an introduction to the basic duties of trustees in higher education and discuss how trustees are selected or appointed. As Michiganders prepare for an election when new trustees for MSU, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University will be elected, this promises to be a timely and interesting session.
